Small theaters in Germany are refusing to show the newest Disney (NYSE: DIS) mega hit The Avengers: Age of Ultron, according to the Hollywood Reporter, unless Disney lowers the rental prices to allow the theaters to screen it. The theaters, spanning across almost 200 towns, further threatened to boycott the next film to be released as well, titled Tinkerbell: Legend of the Neverbeast, unless rates are lowered. According to the Hollywood Reporter, it is standard practice for companies to charge 50% or more of ticket sales in rental fees. While larger theaters in city areas go unaffected due to a larger amount of marketing, smaller theaters are left with paying more than half of overall sales in order to screen the movie, profiting less due to a smaller amount of sales. “Digitization has resulted in major savings for distributors, [savings] that have not yet been passed on to their partners, the cinemas,” AG Kino, an organization that represents small theaters in Germany, said in a statement, THR reported. “We are convinced film rental costs have to come down.”
