Yahoo (NASDAQ: YHOO) debuted its LiveText application at a demonstration event in New York City today, according to Tech Crunch. The application allows users to video chat with each other without the use of sound, superimposing text messages onto the stream. According to Adam Cahan, Yahoo’s senior director of video, design and emerging products, the application is different from Snapchat, or other applications that may seem particularly similar to this technology, citing a simplified user experience is created by the lack of sound. “Whether you’re watching Avicii DJ at the Creamfields Festival, at Venice Beach or taking in the view from the Eiffel Tower, you can spontaneously connect with the people you care about and invite them to experience moments with you,” Yahoo wrote in a blog post about the platform. “Your friend’s goofy look or giant smile, even her eye roll or silent sigh, suddenly become a part of your conversation.” The platform is specifically designed for short burst of conversation, rather than long calls, Tech Crunch reported. However, there is no time limit for calls. I think this application is convenient, particularly for those that need to video chat but may be in a quiet area and can’t have sound. Further, this could be useful for those that forgot headphones. As a commuter, I find it incredibly rude when individuals on public transportation are videochatting, especially without the use of headphones. Livetext could help bridge the gap between necessary video calling and public social media etiquette.
