Kim Davis, the Kentucky county clerk, that refused to issue marriage licenses to both same-sex and heterosexual couples, was ordered to be released from jail today. The news comes just hours before a rally was set to be held protesting Davis’ jailing. Judge David L. Bunning, the same judge that ordered she be placed in jail, released her, according to NPR. Bunning claimed Davis is now fit to be released and is satisfied she will not prevent any more couples from marrying. Davis was jailed last week when she was found in contempt of the court for not issuing marriage licenses not only to same-sex couples, but to all couples. She refused to issue licenses beginning in June, when the Supreme Court ruled same-sex marriage legally in all states. Bunning maintained Davis would be released on the condition she would not prevent any marriages from taking place. In her absence, her deputy clerks have been issuing licenses, which Davis’ attorney claim to be invalid. The Rowan County clerk citied “religious authority” when she was asked why she was not carrying out her position’s responsibilities and was eventually found in contempt of the court. Republican presidential candidates Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee were both set to attend the rally for Davis, both having come out in favor of “religious rights” and her actions based on them. Davis would eventually be released; there was no way she was going to be jailed for an extended period of time. However, I’m extremely surprised that so many political figures have come out in support of her actions, which violated federal law. For individuals running for President of the United States, shouldn’t adhering to the law be the number one concern? Not glorifying those who violate it? Although Kim Davis has been released, this isn’t the end of her story. I have very strong doubts as to her abilities to not interfere with her deputy clerk’s duties. Time will tell.
